This afternoon marked the opening of the 2012 session of the Tennessee Annual Conference which marks the 200th anniversary of our conference. Along with the usual rigmarole, there will be special services and people in historical dress. I’ll have to be honest and admit that I missed the afternoon session, but I was present for an amazing worship service tonight which commemorated 200 years of service. I was excited for tonight’s service because tonight’s preacher is a former professor of mine at Vanderbilt Divinity and a retired bishop Joe Pennel. One thing that really stood out to me from tonight’s sermon was when Bishop Pennel said “A vital congregation is one that practices the means of grace.” That is one of the few times I have heard the term “vital congregation” defined and I believe that Bishop Pennel’s definition is a good one… | read the FULL STORY
